A New Morning Routine

I'm not a morning person.

Never have been. In high school, my mom always had to drag me out of bed, kicking and screaming. And once I started freelancing from home two years ago, it only seemed to get worse. I could start on assignments whenever I wanted to, so sleep in? YES. Check Instagram and Facebook for 30 minutes to an hour cuddled under the blankets? DOUBLE YES.

But it's always one of those things that feels good in the moment and then feels like crap afterwards. I would always roll out of bed, sometimes literally, feeling yucky. Like the world is moving and creating and doing while I'm making a nice indent in my bed.

So, I'm starting a new morning routine.

One that's not too much for this novice morning person, but enough to challenge me to get my butt up and do something.

7:20 a.m.: Alarm goes off
7:30 a.m.: Get up and put on yoga pants
7:30-7:45 a.m.: YOGA
7:45-8:00 a.m.: Get ready for the day
8:00-8:15 a.m.: Tidy up house, let out the dogs
8:15-8:45 a.m.: Devo time
8:45-9:00 a.m.: Breakfast
9:00 a.m.: Start working!

I've done variations of this for the past few weeks, but this is the goal!

Are you a morning person? If so, tell me how you do it! I need help!!

I'm participating in the Jack of All Trades linkup!

  1. I am NOT a morning person! I have to leave my house at 8:1- for work and I try to give myself an hour to get ready, make breakfast, and have a devo. Your morning routine sounds awesome though! that's the dream. I used to work as a nanny from 3-10PM and my mornings were never productive I would roll out of bed, watch Kelly and Michael and then barely get anything done until I showered and went to work. I think If I had had a schedule like yours it would have been much better!

    1. Amen, Mary! I used to work at a bakery and I didn't have to be there until after the morning rush. But it meant that I got absolutely nothing done in the morning. I was pretty worthless. haha! :)

  2. gooood luck!!! I hope this works for you! I never used to be amorning person but I have learned to love quiet early mornings and so I have learned to be. I think it's just about finding a routine that works for you and sticking with it! also try and move your rising time up in little increments AND (this one is hardest) try to keep your rising time within 30-45 minutes of each other every day all week.

    1. Great idea, Emma! I'll try to bump up my rising time 15 minutes earlier next week. We'll see if that helps. I'm finding that I'll never naturally be a morning person, but I can LEARN to be one!

  3. Love this!
I actually am a morning person....who is out of practice!
Since getting married- it's been crazy hard for me to develop a good routine and to actually stick to early mornings!

I am with you though- doing YOGA is SUCH a good way to wake up!
You've inspired me to make it happen!

    1. YOGA is incredible! I've honestly only just recently started doing it and it's changing everything. I feel so great in the mornings now!

  4. This is so hard for me! My New Year's resolution was to stop using snooze, and my husband has done a fantastic job! On the other hand, I have been a complete failure! It's such a bad habit to break!

    1. I'm with you, sister. I'm so bad about it. It's honestly taken me years to finally figure out a semi-routine and even still, I struggle with it. It's a bad habit, but in time, it can be broken!!

  5. I need some of this myself... I wake up at a different time each morning, which puts a little strain on me to get done what I need to do before lunch time.

    1. I totally understand. It's tricky, but committing to a routine has really helped!

  6. I love how every person is so different! I am definitely a morning person, which can be great, but I'm completely useless after 9pm so that is kind of annoying. Good for you for sticking to your morning routine!
